Tropical Financial celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Welcome to Hispanic Heritage Month celebrated from September 15th to October 15th. Join us in recognizing Hispanics’ contributions to Florida’s economic strength and growth with this year’s national theme, “Latinos: Driving Prosperity, Power, and Progress in America.” By one estimate, Hispanic-owned businesses contribute $800 billion to the U.S. economy every year. Those companies, which range from Carvana to the Los Angeles Angels nationally, and Mastec, Fanjul Corporation, and The Related Group in Florida, employ about 3 million workers.

Tropical Financial Credit Union recognizes the importance of Hispanics in Florida. There are over 5.5 million people with ancestors from the Americas and Spain living in the state, many of them in the eight counties that the credit union serves. Hispanics make up over 27% of Florida’s population as a whole.

Did you know this about Hispanic Heritage Month?

  • The acknowledgment began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week with a declaration from President Lyndon Johnson. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan expanded it to a month.
  • The celebration begins on September 15 because it marks the anniversary of independence for five Hispanic countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The cultural recognition continues on September 16 to mark the same holiday in Mexico and on September 18 in Chile.

During the month, Hispanic Tropical Financial employees are wearing the pins of the country they represent. Our credit union has long been committed to representing the communities it serves through its workforce and the services it provides.
