At Tropical Financial Credit Union, we believe in celebrating those who make South Florida a better place. That’s why we partnered with the Florida Panthers to launch the Community Hero Campaign — a mission to find and honor someone who selflessly gives back, uplifts others, and makes a meaningful difference in their community.
Out of more than 460 heartfelt nominations, one name rose to the top: Layla Crehan.
Layla is not your typical 20-year-old. She is an artist, athlete, advocate, public speaker, philanthropist, and role model who also happens to be on the Autism spectrum. Her inspiring journey is a testament to resilience, passion, and the power of using your voice and talents for good.
Despite navigating challenges related to Autism, ADHD, and anxiety, Layla has never let those labels define her. Instead, she has used her platform to empower others—especially those in the special needs community. Through her involvement in Special Olympics Florida, Layla competes in seven sports, including open water swimming, standup paddleboarding, and alpine skiing. She’s even been featured on ESPN for giving Tim Tebow his first surfing lesson!
Layla doesn’t just compete—she leads. She serves as a Health Messenger, Global Messenger, and Athlete Leader, encouraging others to stay physically and mentally healthy. Outside of sports, she’s a talented artist who donates her creations to charitable auctions, and a fearless speaker who visits local schools to educate students about bullying and inclusion. She has even advocated on Capitol Hill to fight for better healthcare access for individuals with special needs.
Her philanthropic efforts are just as impressive. At 16, Layla became the youngest person to attempt the Crossing for Cystic Fibrosis, an 80-mile paddle from Bimini to Florida. Although weather cut her first journey short, she’s training for a second attempt this year—fueled by the inspiration of Florida Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. If successful, she’ll be the first openly Autistic person to complete the crossing.
During Autism Awareness Month, Layla is donating 100% of the proceeds from her arts and crafts sales to the Piper’s Angels Foundation, continuing her lifelong habit of giving back.
Layla’s impact reaches across Florida—from mentoring young artists and advocating for water safety as Baby Otter Swim School’s National Ambassador, to logging over 500 volunteer hours in her senior year of high school.
She’s not just a community hero—she’s a force of nature.
Tropical Financial and the FL Panthers are honored to name Layla Crehan as the 2025 South Florida Community Hero. Her story reminds us all of what it truly means to lead with heart, courage, and purpose.
Congratulations, Layla. Thank you for being a light in our community.
